About your theatre, Stolen Chair

"One of NYC's most remarkable and accomplished young companies."
-Martin Denton, NYtheatre.com

Named "Best Genre-Bending Theatre" by New York Press, Stolen Chair is a theatre laboratory dedicated to the creation of playfully intellectual, wickedly irreverent, and exuberantly athletic original works. Proudly plundering the pop culture of the past half millennium, Stolen Chair’s work recycles and reinvents old genres and stories to discover new ways to challenge and delight contemporary audiences.

Since it was founded in 2002, the company has created twelve critically-acclaimed original productions, including the “Unholy Hybrids," a series of works which tackle contemporary taboos through the lens of irreverently inappropriate styles (like our raucous vaudeville about death!), and the CineTheatre Tetralogy, four plays which fuse classic American film styles with classic European playwriting styles (like our absurdist take on film noir!).

Stolen Chair's 8th season will be devoted to the creation of its 13th original work Quantum Poetics: A Science Experiment for the Stage. This world premiere mash-up of laboratory theatre and laboratory science will transform recent advances in theoretical physics and neuroscience into an immersive theatrical world filled with multiple realities, synesthesia, impossible paradoxes, time travel, and cognitive dissonance.

Stolen Chair's CST is made possible by The Field's Economic Revitalization for Performing Artists (ERPA) program, supported by the Rockefeller Foundation's 2008 New York City Cultural Innovation Fund. Community Supported Theatre is a trademark of the Stolen Chair Theatre Company, Inc.
