Over the course of nine years, Stolen Chair has become a vital hub for adventurous theatre-goers, artists, students, and social innovators. Your donation ensures that:
• More than 25 artists will have a theatrical home to develop collaborative original work.
• Students from across the Tri-State area will have the opportunity to explore the 500-year-old theatrical tradition of Commedia dell'Arte.
• Stolen Chair will continue to lead the nonprofit sector by growing effective business models for the arts.
Small though we might be, Stolen Chair's influence reaches into many different communities, and, in order to keep doing so, we need you to join our community of supporters.
We're not even three months in, but 2011 is shaping up to be an incredible year for Stolen Chair. We've revived two of our best loved works, Stage Kiss and Kinderspiel, to critical acclaim. In a 4-star review of Stage Kiss, TimeOut said "the spunky production plants a big sloppy smooch on its audience," while NYtheatre.com raved, "Kiran Rikhye’s gorgeous play Kinderspiel had me completely, utterly hooked. Stolen Chair pulls out a dangerously delightful production."
While performing these two plays, we've been dreaming up big plans in the studio for Cut Paste Corset Perfect, a playful and surreal new work inspired by Victorian photocollage. The members of our nationally-recognized PlayGround have watched this development process unfold, previewing works-in-progress, sitting down with the company to make their own photocollages, and chatting with guest speakers like Malcolm Daniel, head curator of photography at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Our PlayGround community is set to grow in coming weeks as it moves into its new home at the legendary Judson Church, one of the three sites which launched the off-off-Broadway movement in the 1960s. Cut Paste Corset Perfect will have its world premiere this summer.
After years of partnering with Vital Theatre to deliver our unique programs to NYC public school students, Stolen Chair has recently launched its very own arts-in-education program. As the only organization bringing Commedia dell'Arte and many other physical theatre techniques to Tri-State area schools, Stolen Chair is fulfilling an important mission to ensure that theatre traditions which have flourished for hundreds of years can continue to inspire a new generation of artists.
In this era of online social networking, organizations like Stolen Chair have the power to connect people in real time and real space, building communities through theatre. We hope you'll consider joining our family of supporters today.
Thank you,
The Chairs (Jon, Kiran, Aviva, Cameron, David, Emily, & Liza)
