As part of the 2004 Philadelphia Fringe Festival, The Stolen Chair Theatre Company presents a short work-in-progress of Sister Carrie: A Spectacle of Warm-Blooded Humanity, freely adapted from Theodore Dreiser's once-banned turn-of-the-century novel.

Carrie boards a train to Chicago and, seduced by the bustle and brilliance of the city, she finds a flat, finds a job, and finds herself in the arms of a charming traveling salesman who offers her a glimpse of a cosmopolitan lifestyle unlike any she has ever known. Stolen Chair's work-in-progress will present the company's collective exploration of the first seven chapters of Dreiser's classic melodramatic novel, featuring a hybrid of Dreiser's dialogue and prose, music of the period and Stolen Chair's trademark physicality.
